Cockroaches can't stand the heatA hospital in Cornwall was plagued by cockroaches. These insects destroy fabric and paper, contaminate medical equipment, and spread diseases like dysentery and typhoid. They also transmit Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, the hepatitis virus, and the E. coli bacterium. The hospital had tried using chemical methods of control without total success. The cockroaches would disappear for a while, but because the eggs survived, a new breed would hatch out within days. The hospital authority were also concerned about the impact of chemicals on the environment and on the health of patients and staff. A more effective treatment is to use Aridair. Although cockroaches like heat, once the temperature rises above 30°C, they're not happy. At 35°C, they have a lower survival rate and their development stops. At 45°C, death will occur in around an hour. And at 50°C, they will all die within minutes. By emptying a ward, then applying Aridair treatment, the cockroaches are eradicated, along with their eggs and any fungus spores they brought in. And by drying moist areas that provide ideal breeding grounds, fresh outbreaks are unlikely. |
